The function of an AC LED Power Supply(also Called LED Driver) is to step down the input voltage to a lower output voltage to meet the LED’s small voltage needs, usually 12 or 24 Volts. It is important to consider your power requirements as AC LED Power Supply can only function with bulbs that already have an internal AC to DC converter.

Power Factor (PF) is the relationship between real and apparent power, and represents the ratio between the actual load (kW) and the apparent load (kVA). Energy efficiency is the main reason customers hunger for solid state LED lighting control systems. The use of high-efficiency drivers increases the energy savings that can be achieved. Higher efficiency power supplies dissipate less heat and result in improved product lifetime.

In addition to energy savings, LED lighting systems must also withstand the test of time. LEDs are known to last significantly longer than traditional lighting systems. Thus the LED power supply must live up to the same life expectancy of the LED. Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) is a good indicator of LED driver quality. One of the most important factors to consider is whether the application needs a constant voltage (CV) or constant current (CC) power supply. A CV driver supplies a fixed voltage and is suitable for lighting applications where the number of LED strings and current draw are unknown. In these applications, current control is accomplished by additional components at the LED itself. CC drivers supply a fixed current and are suitable for applications that require constant current directly connected to the LED. This type of driver operates within limited voltage ranges, and it is therefore essential to choose a driver with an appropriate voltage rating. LEDs cannot function without three essential components: the chipset that emits the light; the driver that regulates power to the light source; and the heat sink that cools the unit. The LED driver is a vital component of the technology as LEDs use the power converted by the driver to generate light. These drivers are very efficient in converting electricity, which is why a 100W LED bulb can replace a 400W metal halide bulb.

#1 Output Voltage
Always consider the voltage required by your light(s). If they require 12 volts for operation, use a 12-volt driver.

When using a constant-current LED driver, consider the LEDs’ current output (in amps or milliamps) and ensure your driver will produce power within your lights’ specified range.

With constant-current drivers, both current range and voltage have to be considered. With constant-voltage drivers, only the voltage range needs to be considered.

#2 Input Voltage
While most LED drivers will accept a range of input voltages, ensure that the voltage available at your location is compatible with the driver you’re using.

Most household voltage is 120 volts, while most commercial and industrial voltages are 277 volts. If you’re unsure, check with your electrician.

When dealing with constant-current LEDs, consider their current input as well.

#3 Wattage
Calculate the total wattage of your light or lights and ensure your driver has a maximum wattage capability greater than this.

Don’t use a driver with a light or lights that exceed its max wattage or that use less than 50% of its max wattage.

#4 Dimming
Constant-current and constant-voltage LED drivers can both be made with the ability to dim, but the dimming capability must be stated on the dimmer’s specs, otherwise it’s safe to assume the system is not dimmable.

LED drivers should operate a group of LED lights that use up to 80% of the maximum wattage output of the driver. Drivers should not be paired with an LED that is at or exceeds the driver’s maximum wattage to avoid overstressing the driver components.

LED drivers, like most electrical components, can be sensitive to moisture and temperature. For maximum reliability, they require a relatively dry mounting location with adequate ventilation to keep the unit operating within its optimal temperature range.

To work out how many watts your run of tape needs simply multiply the wattage of the tape by the number of meters you are running. For example, 5m of 6w LED tape requires 30 watts. We would recommend using a driver with an output capability of 33 watts or more to power this tape.

Choose a driver with a max wattage higher than the wattage of your light. Do not pair a driver with a light that exceeds the driver’s maximum wattage or with a light that uses less than 50% of the driver’s maximum wattage.

The driver is the heart of the LED light, and driver life can range from 10,000 to over 50,000 hours, depending on the design features, heat sink efficiency, capacitor construction, and overall quality. The above graph compares the lifespans of various types of lighting.

Use a voltmeter and measure the output voltage of the LED driver. Constant current LED drivers may be at an exceedingly high voltage, so be careful. If the LEDs have failed the output voltage of the LED driver will be at its rated output (maximum voltage output for a constant current LED driver).

Fluorescents use ballasts, while LEDs use drivers. (LED drivers can be considered ballasts as well, but most documentation prefers ‘drivers’ or ‘power supply’ to avoid confusion with fluorescent ballasts.) Both ballasts and drivers do more than simply charge up their respective lights.

Using the wrong driver in an LED system could result in your lights failing, and even damage being caused to the components used. But which LED driver you should use depends on a number of factors, like the voltage, wattage, and function of the lights you’re fitting.

It may be possible to add multiple areas of lighting into one driver, even when they are located far apart. However, you must consider whether the power cable on the light fitting will reach the driver. If not, you will need to add another driver into your plan.

First, Understand That an LED Driver is a Power Supply – Designed Specifically for LEDs.

There are two primary methods of connecting Leds: parallel and series. You will mostly apply series wiring when working with a constant power driver. But if you are working with a constant voltage driver, you will apply parallel wiring. Besides, you can use both methods to get a specific voltage.

Such a resistor is often called a ballast resistor. The ballast resistor is used to limit the current through the LED and to prevent excess current that can burn out the LED. If the voltage source is equal to the voltage drop of the LED, no resistor is required.

There are two types of LED drivers: Constant Current LED drivers and Constant Voltage LED drivers.

LED light bulbs flicker when the frequency is lower than 50Hz. LED light bulbs may also flicker if the wiring is incorrect or loose. Another reason is incompatible dimmer switches. Last but not the least, a problem with one or more LED bulb components, like a faulty LED driver, may also cause flickering.

LED drivers can be divided into two types: AC-DC LED drivers and DC-DC LED drivers. The AC power source of AC-DC LED drivers is directly connected to the mains, but the DC power source of DC-DC LED drivers can be from an AC to DC power supply or a DC input such as a centralized power supply bus or a battery.

No, low voltage will not damage an LED light as they are a diode, meaning, if you don’t supply enough voltage, proper light won’t be emitted. This is partially way dimming switches work so well with LED lighting.

Either overdriving or underdriving means that your LED driver has become faulty. Some common signs of a faulty LED driver include: FlickeringBuzzing.

Unless there are any visual burn marks or visually burnt components, the driver can be repaired. When a capacitor fails, the top usually bulges upward and it is no longer flat. If you see that, then for sure the capacitors need to be replaced, and although not always necessary, I always replace both of them.

This solution consists simply of a changed arrangement of the feedback circuit. With this new arrangement, the output voltage of the flyback becomes variable while the difference between flyback and LED output voltage is regulated.

Disadvantages: Most LED drivers operate from a switching regulator, which causes electrical noise in nearby electronics. This characteristic makes it necessary to be built to certain standards to minimize electrical and radio noise. This adds to the cost of using LEDs, but must be done.

The LED Driver can be earthed via metal housing. If the LED Driver will be earthed, protection earth (PE) has to be used. There is no earth connection required for the functionality of the LED Driver.
